Photoshop is one of my most favorite things. It was one of my very first stepping stones into the photography world. One of the best things about Photoshop is that there is always something new to learn. I remember my days as a total newbie fondly. I read and watched everything I could get my hands on. It was always so exciting for me to learn how to get a little bit closer to my dream images. Here are some great tutorials just for Photoshop beginners.
If Lightroom is more your thing then don’t feel left out! I didn’t forget about you guys. Make sure to check out this list of awesome Lightroom tutorials for beginners.
Layers are one of the most powerful things in Photoshop, and it is something that all Photoshop beginners need to learn before they can really get started editing their images. This tutorial is great because it not only talks about Layers and how they work but it also goes over how to use Layer Masks.
Layer Masks are the freakin’ best! It always surprises me when someone tells me that they are still using the eraser tool. Layer Masks are so much easier, and they provide so much more control!
Nothing beats Photoshop Actions when you want to save time or get a certain look. In a perfect world, everybody would know how to hand edit, would enjoy editing (you haters, you), and would have the time to do it to each individual picture. But that is just not the case.
This tutorial does an excellent job of talking about what Photoshop Actions are, how to install them, how to use them, and some suggestions about where to find them.
My favorite Photoshop Actions are from Greater Than Gatsby. I talk about them more in my article Post Processing Tools I Can’t Live Without.
If you’ve been reading this blog long enough then you just knew that I had to include a tutorial on cutting subjects from backgrounds. I mean, this was one of the first things I tried. I’m obsessed with them! I have a whole shop dedicated to Digital Backgrounds.
Using Digital Backgrounds is something that all Photoshop beginners can learn how to do, and it is so much fun.
It took me a long time and a lot of practice before I found out which method I liked using when extracting subjects. This tutorial is great because it goes over more than just one way.
If you want to test out your skills after checking out the video, make sure to get one of my free digital backgrounds. Go ahead. Try it out! Practice is how you learn!

Learning about how to use Photoshop is only one little hurdle. A part of being a Photoshop newbie is learning what not to do to an image as well. In this article, I wanted to share some of the worst (and most committed) editing sins that almost everybody does at one point or another.
Learn from other people’s (including my) errors, and skip making these post processing mistakes.
Curves is another tool that Photoshop beginners should know all about. It is incredibly powerful. I can see, however, why it would look intimidating to users who don’t know how it works. I remember the first time I started using this tool. It was a lot of trial and error but it was totally worth it.
This tutorial by MCP Actions does a pretty good job of showing how amazing the Curves tool is, and it goes through different ways of using it. Definitely worth looking at.
There you have it. These 5 tutorials will help Photoshop beginners find their way.
